What is the Year Round School Year?
The example calendar above is also known as the balanced school calendar due to it's more balanced distribution in class days throughout the year. This calendar is among the most common forms of the year round school year (YRS), it significantly shortens the summer break and spreads those extra days throughout the year to give students a more balanced school schedule. This is usually annotated as the 45/15 calendar, with 45 days of instruction, followed by 15 days of break time with the exception of holidays. The other, far less common schedules are the 60/20 calendar, and the 90/30 calendar. Like the traditional school year, there are still 180 days of instruction on this calendar, as well as an equivalent number of vacation days.
Year round school systems are generally divided into two categories; multi-track and single track. The single track system has all students on one unified vacation schedule or track. The multi-track system has students divided up and grouped into separate vacation schedules. There is also a similar school system called the extended school year which is often confused for YRS, however the extended school year adds instructional days while YRS does not always add instructional days.
