The Multi-track Year Round School Year
The multitrack year round school system is very similar to the single track school system, however the students are put on staggered breaks, as such that one group of students is always on break. For example with the 45/15 schedule for year round schooling, track 1 will start at the beginning of the cycle with 45 days of instruction, track 2 will start 15 days into the cycle with 30 days of instruction, track 3 starts 30 days into the cycle with 15 days of instruction, and finally track 4 begins 45 days into the cycle with 15 days of vacation. This is a very basic example and many multitrack school systems still have a common winter and summer break. Often times in those systems, the schedule is changed to a 45/10 system so the remaining 38 days are divided between summer winter, and thanksgiving break.
With this system students are also in school for 180 days, however their breaks are staggered to accommodate more students and reduce overcrowding. This can accommodate up to 33% more students and has reduced costs per student as a result of increased sharing of resources such as classrooms, computer labs, and other general reusable materials. Students needing help from intersessions may not require as many extra resources as the school will already be fully staffed during the students break rotation. This reduction in cost can be between 2-8% in a typical conversion to YRS and with well implemented programs, these savings can be as as much as 15%.
